The 53rd Meeting and Conference of the Association of Language Testers in Europe is organised by the InterUniversity Testing Consortium.and hosted by Ghent University’s Language Centre. It will take place in Ghent from Wednesday 24th to Friday 26th April 2019.

The meeting and conference theme is MULTILINGUAL ACCESS TO EDUCATION, with particular reference to the role of language testing/assessment in diverse tiers of education (primary, secondary, higher, adult), concentrating on processes of access (e.g. in relation to learner entry requirements for newcomers and other learners, language certification of teachers/lecturers, etc.). The conference also takes note of the increasing role of standardized testing in education and elsewhere as inviting a critical turn and raising issues of accountability.

The programme on Wednesday and Thursday is open only to ALTE Members and Institutional affiliates. It includes the meetings of the Standing and Executive Committees, the Special Interest Groups and a workshop for all participants. This part of the programma is wrapped up with a gala dinner on Thursday evening.

The open conference day on Friday April 26 includes plenary sessions, a series of fact presentations and four parallel workshops on themes of specific interest. Plenary speakers include Micheline Chalhoub-Deville (University of North Carolina), Cecilie Hamnes Carlsen (Western Norway University of Applied Sciences), Stef Slembrouck (Ghent University) and Piet van Avermaet (Ghent University).
